How to use hemp protein powder

Use one 35g scoop in a shaker with cold water or milk, or stir a smaller amount into oatmeal, yogurt, or coffee. Flavored Cantein is 22g of protein per scoop. Unflavored is 28g. Start with half a scoop if you are new to hemp protein, then move to a full scoop once you know how it sits with you.

How much to use

The label serving is 35g, which is one Cantein scoop.

  • Vanilla or chocolate: 22g protein, 120 calories, 2g fiber, 0g added sugar.
  • Unflavored: 28g protein, 110 calories, 2g fiber, 0g added sugar.

Half a scoop is a reasonable first try: about 11g of protein for vanilla or chocolate, or 14g for unflavored. A second scoop doubles those numbers and also doubles the fiber. Two scoops is a lot of powder for one drink. Most people do better with one scoop plus food. Ingredient lists and the rest of the label are on ingredients and nutrition.

How to mix it

Pouring water into a shaker next to a bag of Cantein vanilla

Cold-pressed hemp is a little more textured than whey isolate. A shaker bottle or blender is the reliable way to get a smooth drink.

  1. Put 8 to 12 ounces of cold water, milk, or a milk alternative in the shaker.
  2. Add the scoop.
  3. Shake for about 20 seconds. If you still see dry pockets, shake again.

A spoon in a glass leaves lumps. If you want it thinner, add more liquid. If you want it thicker, use less liquid or blend it with ice and a banana.

Unflavored has almost no flavor, so it disappears into coffee or oatmeal. Vanilla and chocolate already taste like a mild shake, so they need less help. Shake ideas are on recipes.

Where to put it

Blending a shake next to a bag of Cantein chocolate
  • A shake. One scoop, cold liquid, shaker. This is the default.
  • Oatmeal or yogurt. Stir in half a scoop after cooking so the powder does not clump on a dry pot. Unflavored changes the taste the least.

Yogurt with blueberries and a dusting of pale protein powder
  • Coffee. Stir half a scoop of unflavored into hot coffee, or blend a full scoop with cold coffee and ice. Heat alone does not dissolve the powder as well as shaking does.

  • A smoothie. One scoop, fruit, and liquid in a blender. The blender does the mixing for you.

You do not need a powder to hit a protein target. Food first, then a scoop if the day is short. A counted day without whey is in how to eat 100g of protein without whey.

If it feels new

Any new daily food can feel different for a few days. Hemp protein has a little fiber from the seed, 2g per scoop. Start with half a scoop in water. If a shake bothers you, change one thing at a time. The walk-through is in why protein powder bloats you.
