Pea free protein powder

Pea free protein powders are widely available today, even though pea is the default plant protein on US shelves. People often look for a pea-free option when bloating is an issue, but still want a plant based option with a complete amino acid. This shortlist covers hemp, rice, egg white, and whey.

What pea free has to mean

Pea protein isolate and concentrate are easy to rule out, but blends are trickier. Pea can hide in pumpkin-and-pea or rice-and-pea mixes, so check the full ingredient list, not just the front of the bag. Soy is not pea, but they’re both legumes, so if beans in general give you trouble, soy may too.

The most common pea free alternatives are hemp or rice protein if you would like a plant based option, or egg white if you eat eggs. See protein powder without whey or pea and soy free protein powder.

Hemp

Hemp is a seed, not a legume. Cantein Unflavored is one ingredient: organic hemp protein. A 35g scoop has 28g of protein and 2g of fiber, with no pea, soy, gums, or stevia. It wins when you want a clean organic label with no legumes and no dairy. It costs more per gram than rice, and lysine is hemp’s limiting amino acid.

Rice

Naked Rice is organic sprouted brown rice protein, about 25g per 30g scoop. It is the low-cost, legume-free plant option on this list. Rice runs low in lysine, which is why many brands blend it with pea. A plain rice powder keeps pea out and leaves lysine to the rest of your diet.

Egg

Egg white powder with sunflower lecithin is among the most complete protein powders next to whey, and a dairy-free pea-free option if you eat eggs. However, it is not vegan, and egg protein (a major food allergen) can rule it out. Powder can also cost more than a carton of egg whites.

Whey

Whey isolate is the most complete protein on the list, but some can contain soy lecithin, so be sure to read the label. However, using sunflower lecithin keeps soy out and is a higher leucine option if you eat dairy. It still contains milk, so for dairy-free only, see dairy-free protein powder.
